Made-To-Order Picture Frame Kits

Picture Frame Kits are an inexpensive way of framing art and pictures that are not of standard sizes or do not fit any ready-made frames. The cost is cheaper than custom frames because there is no picture framing consultation and Customers do the fit up work themselves. Kits ordered with backings are opened and closed by bending the flexible tabs and the art inserted and fitted up. The ordering steps are:

Measure and enter the exact size of the art, print or photo,

Select a Frame and if prompted or seeing errors, heed the prompts,

* Mat width is preset at 7 cm regardless of frames size and cannot be customized.

Important Ordering Notes:

1) Custom Size Picture Frame Kits orders are manually reviewed before processing. Occasionally these may be incorrectly costed, or include unsuitable components, such as selecting a moulding too thin to safely carry the weight and size of the frame. In these cases we will put the order on hold, email the Customer and await instructions.

2) Our Kits suit prints, posters, photos, inexpensive paper art or commercial reproductions. These are not custom frames and may not suit textiles, fabrics, clothes, guernseys, football jumpers, floating art, floater frames, shadow boxes, 3-D frames, light boxes, object-framing, militaria, memorabilia, conservation, museum framing, restorations or other specialized custom picture framing work.

3) Care must be taken when entering both the Kit frame size and any additional components that may be required. If you also need a window mat, glass and backing with your frame, then these have to be added manually as only you will know what to order. Importantly, the Kits are made especially to suit Customers' specifications and cannot be resold to others. If a Kit is incorrectly ordered, a refund may not be possible.

4) When entering sizes, measure exactly what your art, or work size is. Do not add or allow for assembly clearances. We will do that by adding 3-6 mm as the fitting up clearance. This will enable a comfortable fitting up of the components. Please do not order or buy frame kits if this does not suit your requirements.

Q : Can I order made-to-measure Picture Frame Kits online here?

A: Yes, by using the Form above. Start by measuring your art, then entering its size followed by whichever component you may want to add. Most Customers order all the components, these being the Frame, the Mat, the Glass and the Backing, but some need fewer components. It is your choice what you want to add. The Form will display error messages should any occur.

Q: Why are Kit Frames cheaper than custom picture frames?

A: Simply because there’s less work for a picture framer to do. Firstly, there’s no lengthy face-to-face consultation with Customers. Secondly, there’s no laborious wet or dry mounting of the art. Thirdly, there’s no time-consuming fitting up of the artwork. All this results in a less expensive product for Customers.

Q: How will I know the price quotation or cost my Frame Kit ?

A: Rather than price estimates or price quotations, the Form above gives you accurate, exact and real-time costs. As you add each component, the Frame, the Glass, the Mat, the Glass and the Backing. the Total continuously updates itself. The amount you see is exactly what you will pay later at the Checkout. No unpleasant surprises or sneaky add-ons, fees or costs.

Q : What is included in a Kit Frame?

A: All Kit Frames are supplied as ready to assemble frame kits. Each includes the joined frame, a window mat ( if selected ), a pane of glass ( if selected and a backing ( if selected ). It will also have several flexible tabs inserted at the back which allow for the insertion of artwork and a picture framing cord with which hang the frame. The Kit will also be fitted with white corner protectors to protect the corners from handling or accidental damage.

Q : Can I put any photo, poster or print in a Kit Frame?

A: Yes, pretty much any commercial, reproduction art into a Frame Kit. These kits function as DIY picture frames for photos, posters, and prints at home. However Kits shouldn’t be used for rare, valuable, limited-edition, expensive artwork of personal historical or financial value. These latter items generally require specialized, archival, conservation, or museum custom framing.

Q: What are the benefits of Frame Kits compared to standard sizes?

A: Frame Kits can accommodate not only any standard size, but additionally, all the sizes not catered for by standard sizes frames. In our experience, about 60% of all artwork brought in by Customers is of non-standard size. This means that it will require either a Frame Kit or custom framing, with the former being cheaper than the latter.

Q: Are online Framing Kits better than department store-bought frames?

A: Absolutely! Our online framing kits are handmade here in Melbourne, constructed from real wood, employing superior workmanship and using quality materials. Importantly, and unlike store-bought, imported frames, the four joints and corners of a Kit Frame are hand-glued for robustness and durability. Store-bought frames are dry-jointed, meaning that they’re not glued, for faster, cheaper production. However this invariably results in weaker, rickety, frames and is the main reason why so many Customers complain to us about them.

Q : I’ve got huge A0-size posters, do I really need custom-made Frame Kits?
